  Explore Exmoor

Straddling West Somerset and North Devon, Exmoor is a truly tranquil corner of England with a lovely coastline and beautiful rural scenery. Dominated by the National Park, Exmoor is also home to the Quantock and Brendon Hills, West Somerset’s gentle farmland, and the fictional home of Tarka the Otter. Visitors can explore England's highest coastline, visit ancient castles, and enjoy fine dining in medieval Dunster.

Exmoor National Park

Although Exmoor is one of Britain's smallest National Parks, covering just 267 square miles, it never feels crowded and has many claims to fame. It's home to the tallest tree in England at Nutcombe Bottom - as well as the country’s highest cliffs, the 800ft Hangman cliffs near Combe Martin. The region is also famous for its ponies, as well as diverse landscapes which include rolling moorland, thickly wooded valleys (combes), ancient farms, and dramatic sea cliffs.

Exmoor's Coast

The South West Coastal Path takes in some spectacular scenery along Exmoor's 40 miles of coastline, passing popular seaside towns en route. Minehead is the most famous, offering sand and pebble beaches and plenty of family fun, while the smaller town of Watchet attracts visitors to its busy marina, Old Port, steam railway, and quaint shops and houses.

Horseriding and Walking in Exmoor

Horse riding and walking are the two most popular activities in Exmoor, and it's not surprising when you realise there are more than 985 kilometres of rights of way on your doorstep, including 400 kilometres of bridleways. Apart from the coastal path, long distance walkers can also follow the Two Moors Way, which links Exmoor and Dartmoor. If you'd rather take it a bit easier, there are plenty of shorter walks, and the Moor Rover Bus is on hand to pick you up and drop you off anywhere on Exmoor, so you don't have to find a circular route. The area is also a haven for cyclists, bird-watchers and anglers.

Exmoor Heritage Attractions and Sightseeing

You'll never be short of things to do. Just a few of Exmoor's most popular visitor attractions are Lynton and Lynmouth’s Victorian water-powered cliff railway, Dunster Castle, the Exmoor Pony Centre, and the West Somerset Steam Railway. Another popular family attraction is the Exmoor Falconry and Animal Farm, which offers hawk walks, clay pigeon shooting, riding, and bird of prey experiences.

Like the rest of the West Country, Exmoor has an incredibly packed calendar of events throughout the year, particularly in the Summer months.
